The first rule of thumb for doing paid online surveys is to NEVER, EVER pay to do them! This includes paying for a company to send you the surveys for you to complete. The best thing about doing paid surveys online is that is it completely free. The only thing it should cost you is your time, which you are in turn compensated for.

There are many different kinds of compensation for doing paid online surveys. The best form is always cash, but these can be harder to come by. Other forms of payment are usually prizes which can be redeemed from points you receive for completing online surveys. 

When I first started doing online surveys I signed up with every company I found. I would complete the surveys they sent me, and over time I found which ones worked best for me and stuck with those. The funny thing about doing these online surveys is that different companies work better for different people, it just depends on your demographic and what they are looking for. So my suggestion is sign up with them all...see what comes to you...stick with the ones that work.
